Sustainable Fashion

The fashion industry is responsible for nearly 10% of global carbon emissions. Especially with the rise of fast fashion, the textile waste that accumulates grows exponentially. Currently, it is estimated that 92 million Tonnes of textiles are wasted every year. As the process of creating clothing uses a lot of resources, this wastage consequently also creates a lot of wasted water and water pollution which has negative consequences on the climate.

As sewing is one of my hobbies, I did not want to give up on it completely. Therefore I looked at different approaches to make my sewing more sustainable and less wasteful. The different approaches I found were for example to use second hand fabric or use patterns that create less of no fabric waste. However, because I had already accumulated a lot of fabric that I was not using, I landed on finding ways to reuse this fabric.

Process

My approach was to find new ways to use fabric scraps and old fabric I wasn’t using anymore. By cutting up my old fabric pieces and utilizing them as filling, I was able to create a unique puffer camera bag that not only looked good, but also had a positive impact on the environment. This process allowed me to not only be creative and resourceful, but also to take an active role in reducing waste and be more sustainable in my sewing.
